Status of traffic signaling on Rockville Pike (MD355) at Cedar Lane/West Cedar Lane

Dear Residents,

As you know, there have been many concerns about changes in the traffic signaling on Rockville Pike (MD 355) at Cedar Lane/West Cedar Lane. This is a very complex intersection with many lanes and many varied movements. Any signaling changes must be considered with great care because changing one traffic movement will affect many other traffic movements.

Here is a message from Anyesha Mookherjee of the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA), which she has asked me to share with you, regarding these changes. Please note that before the changes she discusses can be implemented, the changes must undergo further testing prior to being integrated into the signaling system. The testing may cover a period of weeks and, if successful, would require traffic at the intersection to be halted for a short period of time during off-peak hours in order to install appropriate signaling technology. SHA intends to issue a formal announcement once the signaling changes have advanced successfully through these processes.

“This is in further response to your constituent’s traffic and safety concerns at the subject intersection in Montgomery County. The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) District Three traffic office appreciates the opportunity to be of assistance to you.

We are pleased to inform you that flashing red left-turn operation was recently approved along southbound MD 355 except during the evening peak period and along northbound MD 355 except when the movement is currently restricted at the subject intersection. With this flashing red left-turn signal, southbound and northbound left-turn vehicles are allowed to turn left after a complete stop when the red left-turn arrows are flashing. This should address the issue that you brought to our attention, namely having to wait a full cycle for the green arrow in case one misses it. As this flashing red left-turn operation was only recently approved by our Office of Traffic and Safety, a schedule for its implementation is not yet available at this time.
